Hi friends, it's Danny with ADU Resource Center, and today we are in Sylmar with the Torres family. Erica and Juan, congratulations. You have a brand-new baby. Thank you. And I have some exciting news. So one of the neat things about our job is we get to build for families like you. And I think we talked off-camera that this is the first time in 85 years, at least in America, that three generations are now living on the same property, Mom, Dad, granddaughter, and all that sort of thing. So that's awesome, a family that stays toget- plays together, stays together, that sort of thing. That's wonderful. Um, I was commenting when we drove up, I didn't even notice the house because it didn't look like an ADU. This is a 1,200 square foot, three bedroom, two bath ADU with a gar- detached garage, and it looks just like the regular par- the houses in the neighborhood. So I'm, I'm sure you're bur- pretty happy the way that turned out as well, right? Mm-hmm. Right. Oh yeah, it looks great. Definitely. Yeah. How about your new garage? Is that your, your new- Oh ... your new man cave? It's gonna be a project there. That's good. That's good. I told her, "The house is yours. The garage is all mine." Nice. Good trade. So, so tell me, so when you guys were talking about it, um, one of the things I know your dad, Oscar, was really kind enough to let you guys do, is build on the property. I think he enjoys having you here on the property, doesn't want you to leave either. Um, who... Did he get involved much in the design? 'Cause according to your contractor right here, he said that he was basically hands-off, and you guys did all the decision-making on the designs pretty much, right? Yeah. Yeah. It was all us. Um, we would ask his opinions, but he would be like, "You know, it's up to you. It's your, it's your ADU. Do everything how you want." He is the coolest. Yeah. 'Cause most parents wouldn't be that, that hands-off, right? Yeah, he's great. Yeah. All right. He's a great father. So I notice, one of the things that I think people are gonna notice, today we're gonna have an open house, and we're gonna have people coming by, and people that are starting, just like you. How many months back? How many months has it been that, since we started? A year, I guess, right? I think maybe two. I think it's 2022. Yeah, it's been a while. It's been a while. Mm-hmm. We got the planning phase and then the construction phase, but you are almost at the end of the tunnel, this much left- Mm-hmm ... and I think you move in. So there's boxes of furniture. Anyway, um, tell me about the design process. Did you enjoy that? 'Cause some people like that part. Some people get a little anxious on designing the house, 'cause they don't wanna make any mistakes. Mm-hmm. How did that go for you? I think it was a little bit of both. It was mostly fun, but also, you know, you don't want to have any regrets with anything that you choose later- Mm-hmm ... that then are gonna be hard to fix. But overall, it's mostly fun just getting to design everything how you want it and just get it custom and just, you know, make it your own. Did we use a template, or did we, did we freestyle the floor plan? Did you... I, I can't remember. Um, I showed you a floor plan that I liked, that I had seen, and then you showed me one that you guys had that was very similar, and we went with that one. Ah, that's right. That's right. Mm-hmm. Okay. So the people that are watching, they're at the very, very beginning. You're almost at the end of the finish line. Mm-hmm. What advice do you have for people that were like you when you started, and scared? Nobody wants to make a mistake. Mm-hmm. What advice would you give to them? Um, I would say just be patient and have fun with it. Um, try not to put too much pressure on yourself to, to feel like you have to do everything, you know, perfect. Um, I think you need to trust the process, and, um, it, it's all worth it in the end. The planning takes a long time. Mm-hmm. The construction takes less than the planning, but- Mm ... collectively, they take a long time. Mm-hmm. But I'm told it's like labor pains. I wouldn't know. But after- Mm ... the baby's here, you forget about all the, the delays- Oh, yeah ... and the waiting. So it looks like it's hopefully gonna be worth it for the wait. Mm-hmm. And it was worth waiting for. Yeah. The transition from planning to construction with Vache of California Construction, how was that transition? It was great. It, yeah. It was- Communication was there. Mm-hmm. Um, anything we needed, they were making sure that they got it done. Yeah. So it's, it's very appreciated with them. Mm-hmm. A- and I understand these are not designed in heaven. They're designed by people, and people make mistakes. And I think we made a mistake on the ceiling, right? That you caught, and so they designed- No, actually, she caught. Mm. I did. Right? She caught. I just saw some extra wood right there going straight across. I was like, "That doesn't look right." We're gonna be inserting pictures of this glorious vaulted ceiling, but at, when we st- first started framing it, it was not, it was not vaulted, and we go, "Uh-oh. Uh-oh." So we had to back up, which is okay, because that's what we do. Sometimes we make mistakes, but we corrected it, and this is exactly what you wanted, right? Mm-hmm, yeah. And how glorious is that? It looks so good. It's great. Yeah. Now, um, I think your move-in date's coming. I think you're very, very close. Couple of inspections, and then you're ready to go. Mm-hmm. Um, tell me this. Um, did you st- and one of the things that I'll, I'll, I'll kind of finish this interview with is, is budget. When people get started, there's a lot of zeros. That's, that's, that's my, that's my question. Yeah. There's a lot of zer- there's a lot of zeros involved, and people can have anxiety, as you well know, right? Mm-hmm. And we, we set a threshold. We say, "We're, we're not gonna spend over this," but we always do, because it's something that you said, "Hey, we want this," right? Mm-hmm. We know we went over budget a little bit. Well, everybody does a little bit, but are you happy with the end result? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We're definitely happy. Um, I think there's some places that you need to be okay with sacrificing, going a little under budget, so you can go over on other things that you want more. On what you want. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. So, so- Tell us a little bit about your budget. Yeah, so this is Vache Maduroz with California Construction Group. Uh, I didn't get the chance to introduc- introduce myself in the beginning. So, uh, in regards to that question, going over budget, we had initial basic budget set up for you guys, right? So during that process-We stayed, I believe we stayed within the budget, but any upgrades that you guys chose to, for example, the backsplash that we have in here- Yeah ... uh, w- we, y- you chose to go a little bit, you know, upgrade it to, to use the same exact stone to go to the back. That's something that was- Yeah ... upgraded. And it looks gorgeous. And small things, small things like that. Would you say that we stayed within budget and, like, you know, it's very important, uh, because when you come in and, and, uh, w- the way that we bid on these ADU Resource project is we, uh, you know, we have the plans and we owe the plans to you. Mm-hmm. You know what I mean? Would you say that, that was, we stayed within the budget? I would say so- Yeah ... overall. Yeah, I mean, it sounds scary when you're, you know, thinking about what to go over budget. I'm just thinking of going over budget is scary, but realistically, like, in the, in the end it's not, it's not terrible. Just to clarify for the people that are watching on the video, when we start, everything has an allowance, everything has a budget, and every- everything from the floor cost to the countertops to the cabinets, everything's got an itemized cost. But if the customers say, "Hey, I saw something I kinda like. It's a little bit nicer. Can I spend a little bit more?" You'll spend the difference, and usually it's, uh, it's a good upgrade. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So that's- Yeah, it's worth it ... one of them. Now, communication-wise, you know, transitioning from, as Danny mentioned, transitioning for design to the construction portion, how was that transition in regards to on a daily basis? And I also want to invite our project manager, who was part of our daily operation, daily communication. How was this guy's communication- Well, Sean ... and, uh, you know, uh, did you feel that there was a, a, a small, uh, gap transitioning between the design and construction team? You know, I was actually gonna mention Sean, because, you know, anytime we had any questions about anything, any concerns, I would text him, call him. He answers right away and, you know, helps us out as best as he can. So it's been great. Thank you. Good. Yeah. So thank you, Sean. Wonderful. Thank you so much. You've been great. Thank you, Sean. Appreciate it. Even if I didn't have the answer for us then and there, but I, let me get back to you on that. Perfect. Mm-hmm. Perfect. Yeah. That's, that's very crucial to have a team that is... Uh, besides that, Danny, we have a group text message that we always text communicate together- Yeah ... just make sure that we're all on the same page- Right ... just to ensure there's nothing is, you know, falling through cracks- Beautiful ... and things like that. Um, maybe second to the last question, um, is there anything that you didn't do that you thought about and you said, "Well, w- we don't need it," or, "We don't want it," and now do you have any regrets, or did you get everything on the wish list that you wanted? I think we got, I think we got everything. I think we got pretty much everything that we wanted. That's how we do it. Yeah. That's how you wanna do it. You don't wanna have regrets. Mm-hmm. So, uh, the thing is, you're building a house, you're not buying a car. You should get everything that you want, and design it with love and get it with love. So I think that's great. Mm-hmm. So last question, if you did it all over again, would you still design with ADU Resource Center and build with California Construction? Yes. Oh, yeah. 100%. We would, of course. Definitely in mine. It was a huge project. All right. Thanks. We appreciate it. Thank you for letting us be a part of this. We're very happy- Thank you ... to be the team that you guys have selected, and we're able to give you exactly what you guys wanted. And if you'd like to build your own ADU- Yes. Thank you ... call the number below.
